Out and About

When you’re looking for great ways to spend your free time, whether it’s enjoying a nice meal, taking in a movie, or having fun knocking down some bowling pins with your kids, MWR offers plenty of options for military families. When you’re ready to venture out into the Pacific Northwest and explore the many delights Puget Sound has to offer, be sure and check out some of the following places and activities!

KIDS’ CORNER

Let’s face it, sometimes it’s tough being a military kid and a military parent, but between MWR and local community activities, there are plenty of resources designed to help the military child and just as many outlets for fun and educational activities.

Art Programs

Art classes for kids age four and up with locations in Silverdale, Gig Harbor, and Manchester. For more information, visit their website at www.kitsapart.com.

Swimming Lessons

Pools at Bangor and Bremerton offer American Red Cross Learn to Swim programs for children of all ages. For more information, call 476-9416 (Bremerton) or 315-2134 (Bangor).

Navy Child Care Resource and Referral

Navy Child Care Resource and Referral staff are able to help military families find child care options and information, central enrollment and waiting list for all Navy Region Northwest child development programs, and parent and provider resources including videos, books and articles. Hourly and ongoing child care is available at several on-base child development centers. Please contact the center nearest you for more information:

Hourly Childcare

Hourly Childcare is now available at Jackson Park for children between the ages of 6 weeks and 12 years! Hourly care is available in 2 hour blocks. Children must be registered through the Child Development Homes before utilizing this program. For more information call 360-476-8666.

Admiral Boorda Youth
and Teen Center

Teen Programs.  The teen recreation program will continue to be offered as normal through the summer.  Teen members are able to sign themselves in and out of the program each day.  Late-nights will be extended till midnight on Friday evenings.  Teen program members must be at least 13 years old, or be in at least 7th grade.  Children exiting 6th grade are eligible to join the teen program on the first day of Summer Program, June 25.  Teens get to enjoy basketball, field trips, bowling, go-karts, swimming, movies, and more!

 

 

COUNSELING AND SUPPORT GROUPS

Even though we are all proud military spouses with a can-do attitude, sometimes we need a little help and support. Whether you just need some companionship, a shoulder to lean on, or professional assistance, there are plenty of resources available for the military spouse.

CAPS

The Counseling, Advocacy, and Prevention Services (CAPS) provides a variety of programs, support, and services on a confidential basis. From individual and marriage counseling to the New Parent Support Program, CAPS offers numerous services designed to keep Navy families strong. For more information, call 1-866-854-0638.

COMPASS

The COMPASS program is a mentoring service provided by Navy spouses to help other Navy spouses learn more about the Navy lifestyle, acquire the knowledge and skills to successfully meet the challenges of Navy life, and develop realistic expectations and a positive attitude. This is a free program open to all Navy spouses. Childcare is also provided for free.

FLEET AND FAMILY SERVICE CENTER

The FFSC is expanding the amount of services it provides to include One on One Employment Assistance for Spouses, Positive Parenting, Beginning a Small Business, English for Speakers of Other Languages and much more! New to the Area? 

The Your Home Program is designed to help make the most of your tour in Navy Region Northwest.  Upon your request, Your Home will provide a variety of information regarding the programs, services, and facilities at the West Sound bases as well as answer any questions you or your family may have about specific interests or special needs.  The requested information with fun welcome gifts and coupons will be delivered to your doorstep.  Look for or mail-in request cards at prominent locations around base.  You may also contact Your Home at 360-396-5452 or via email at yourhome.cnrnw@navy.mil.

 

Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society:

The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to military members and their families.NMCRS Bremerton is in particular need of volunteers to provide receptionist and personal financial casework support.

On-the-job training is provided and childcare and mileage expenses are reimbursed.If you have a few hours a week to volunteer, please contact the Bremerton office at
360-377-0602.

Volunteering is a rewarding way to meet new people and donate time to your military community; please join us!

 

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

There is good news on the Spouse Career Advancement Accounts program
pilot at Naval Base Kitsap which has expanded.

(1) The biggest news is that the program has opened up to all ranks.
It was previously limited to E-1 to E-5 and O-1 to O-3.
(2) The second important expansion are new fields:

  • Human Resources
  • Business/Management
  • Hospitality Management
  • Homeland Security. 

It was previously limited to Finance, Technology, Health Care, and Education.

The other eligibility requirements remain the same:

  • Husband/wife on active duty
  • Must have at least one year remaining at current duty station (at
    Naval Base Kitsap)
  • Have a High School Diploma, GED or some post-secondary education
  • Training must be completed within 2 yrs and lead to a license/certification or degree. Pre-requisite and remedial courses can be included.

Orientations will continue on Mondays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at
WorkSource, 1300 Sylvan Way, Bremerton, WA, except for federal
holidays.

Spouses are encouraged to drop in any time during that day to have questions answered, process their applications, research educational, institutions and explore career options.  All applicants need to bring their Military ID and their Social Security card or Green card.  If
they already are in school or have a program in mind, they need to bring in
their class schedules, proposed plan for completion and the contact information on the school.  All Applicants will be required to apply for
FAFSA/Federal Student Aid as part of their CAA process.

Military One Source is now partnering with CAA and will provide research for educational programs, Certification or Licensure information based on State requirements, labor market based on locale and wage earning potential as well as career exploration and interest based assessments.
