Executive Officer
Captain Kenneth Iverson
Medical Corps, United States Navy

BIO:

Captain Iverson was born in Longview, Texas.  He obtained a Masters of Divinity degree from Central Baptist Theological Seminary in 1981 and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota under the Navy’s HPSP in 1986.  He completed a Navy Family Medicine internship at Naval Hospital Pensacola, was chosen as the sole intern to continue into residency training and his final year selected as Chief Resident of the thirty resident program.

Captain Iverson’s first utilization tour as a Family Physician was at Branch Medical Clinic, LaMaddalena off the coast of Sardinia, Italy whose primary mission was integral to support of the Submarine Tender the USS ORION.  In addition to clinical responsibilities, he functioned as the Director of Ancillary Services.  His next tour at Naval Hospital Orlando commenced in 1991 and he became the Resuscitative Medicine Director and the Affiliate Faculty in ACLS in addition to serving as the Chairman of the Primary Care Committee.

In 1993 Captain Iverson, returned OCONUS transferring to Naval Hospital Rota, Spain where he practiced the full scope of Family Medicine, directed training as the Affiliate Faculty in ACLS and was the Chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.  He acquired specialized training at NASA and became the Director of the Space Shuttle

Support Team, training and coordinating the deployment of a multidisciplinary trauma team on site at various Transatlantic Air Strips in Europe and Africa at the time of each Space Shuttle launch.

He was selected to return to Naval Hospital Pensacola in 1996 as part of the teaching faculty for the Family Medicine Residency.  During the academic year 1997-1998, he completed a part-time, in residence, Faculty Development Fellowship at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and from 1997-2002, he served as the Director of Residency

Training. Additionally, he was Chairman of the Family Advocacy Case Review Committee, a frequent lecturer concerning Domestic Violence in the community, Chairman of the Bioethics Committee, an elected member of ECOMS and he remained active in resuscitative medicine education, becoming an ATLS Instructor and an Advisory Faculty for ALSO.    

In 2002, Captain Iverson transferred to Naval Hospital, Sigonella and upon arrival was selected as the Director of Medical Services.  He was the Chairman of ECOMS for two years, and through reorganization became the Director of Clinical Services with oversight of the Medical and Surgical Directorates.  He led teams developing the hospital’s Business Plans for 2004 and 2005, maintained a full scope of clinical practice and also organized and led ALSO courses in Naples, Iceland and Rota.

In 2005 he reported as a student at the Naval War College in Newport, RI where he received a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies and subsequently was selected as the Senior Medical Corps Detailer at Navy Personnel Command in Millington, TN serving since 2006.

A Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice, CAPT Iverson is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. His military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal in addition to several other personal and unit awards.  Captain Iverson and his wife, Karen, have two children.
